Thousands Of Properties Left Without Power After Storms

Northern Powergrid has said 55,800 properties were left without power after lightning storms hit North East England yesterday.

The violent weather occurred on 1 July during the hottest day of the year so far and the early hours of today 2 July.

Parts of North Yorkshire, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, Teesside and Northumberland were affected.

The energy company diverted electricity supplies, where possible, through alternative routes on its network to restore power to as many customers as possible while its engineers worked to repair the damage caused by the storm.

A spokeswoman for Northern Powergrid said: "Our teams have worked throughout the night restoring power to the vast majority (97%) of customers after lightning storms damaged our power network yesterday afternoon and again in the early hours of this morning."
