'Legal Highs' Seized Across Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester Police have carried out a force-wide operation targeting so-called 'legal highs', seizing quantities of nitrous oxide canisters, synthetic cannabinoids, liquid gold poppers and sachets of gocaine.

The day of action which targeted new psychoactive substances was the first of its kind for Greater Manchester Police. It saw collaboration between organisations such as Trading Standards, Child Services, Department for Work and Pensions as well the UK Border Force Services.

Superintendent Craig Thompson, who was leading on the operation, said: "This day has really highlighted the growing risk of new psychoactive substances. The items are easily accessible from retailers across the county which is why it's important for this type of work to be carried out.

"Our concern is that these products have similar effects as drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy, and because the unstable and varied nature of the contents, the true side effects can never be predicted.

"Rest assured, this is not a one-off. We will continue to crackdown on these products with the support of our partners to ensure the safety of the public."
