New GWR Train Times Will Be 'Slower Than 1970s' - RMT
New £4.5 billion Intercity Great Western Trains will have slower journey times than forty years ago, it has been claimed.
Research by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) has stated trains running from London to south Wales will be slower than those provided by British Rail (BR) in the 1970s.
The Great Western Railway (GWR) has said that from December 2018, its typical journey times are likely to be as follows:
• London to Bristol Temple Meads: 90 minutes.
• London to Cardiff: 113 minutes.
• London to Swansea: 164 minutes.
However, research shows that in 1977 the BR Intercity trains still being used today advertised the following times:
• London to Bristol Temple Meads: 85 minutes.
• London to Cardiff: 105 minutes.
• London to Swansea: 163 minutes.
RMT General Secretary Mick Cash said: "This report demonstrates once again that rail privatisation has been one of the biggest ever post war policy failures. Privatised rail services are not only more overcrowded and expensive they are also slower.
"And of course as well as being publicly owned, BR trains were publicly manufactured for far less cost in the UK, as opposed to the new IEP trains which are manufactured in Japan."

Landslip Closes Railway Line
A landslip in the Chipping Sodbury area has closed the main line running between London to Bristol and South Wales. The landslip has closed the closure of the line between Bristol Parkway and Swindon in both directions. First Great Western has released details of changes in services as a result of the incident.

Man Jailed For Attempted Murder Of Pc
A south London man has been jailed for 25 years for tying to shoot a policeman. Michael Mitchell, 32, of Babington Road, Streatham, was convicted of attempting to murder Pc Shaun Callow, possession of a firearm and possession of drugs with intent to supply.

Suspicious death at West Yorkshire railway station
A railway station in West Yorkshire has been closed following the discovery of a man's body in the car park. Police were called to Fitzwilliam Train Station at Fitzwilliam in Pontefract just before 1:45am where the body was found. The man was taken to Pontefract General Infirmary where he was pronounced dead.

Teen in court over stabbing death
A 17-year-old has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman stabbed to death on a south London street. The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of murdering Carmelita Tulloch, 51. Mrs Tulloch, who has two daughters and a granddaughter, was attacked as she walked to work around 9am on Tuesday morning.
