Half of all UK homes connected to Internet
Half of all UK homes now have Internet access, according to new consumer research published today by Oftel.
The key findings of the research show that 12.5 million UK households are now on-line, with 750,000 new connections over the last three months. Prices for dial-up Internet access are now cheaper than other European countries surveyed, with prices for residential broadband generally below the European average.
The report also found that around one million Internet customers are likely to upgrade to broadband over the next 12 months.
The findings are set out in consumer research and a benchmarking study comparing Internet services in the UK with other European countries published today by Oftel.
David Edmonds, Director General of Telecommunications, said: "Growth in Internet access, coupled with some of the lowest prices in Europe, is excellent news. Oftel's policy of creating competitive markets for Internet access continues to drive the growth in Internet access.
"Oftel's research shows that a further one million consumers could upgrade to broadband over the next 12 months. We have a growth rate stronger than both France and Germany.
"Our research shows that 90% of Internet customers happy with their overall service. We look forward to these trends continuing."

Oftel calls for substantial cut in BT net charges
Prices for unmetered Internet access for consumers could fall under proposals from Oftel which would see BT cut prices. Oftel believes that BT should cut its wholesale charges by 17% because it is charging operators for certain call routing and call management measures that Oftel believes are "no longer technically necessary".

BT told to reduce charges for Internet access
The communications watchdog Oftel has today ordered BT to reduce its charges for wholesale unmetered Internet access. Following an investigation and proposals set out earlier this year, Oftel has concluded that BT has been charging operators for certain call routing and call management measures "that are no longer necessary".

Carphone Warehouse acquire AOL UK
Carphone Warehouse has bought AOL Internet access business in the UK from Time Warner for �370 million. The acquisition of the AOL's access business will give Carphone Warehouse an enlarged broadband customer base of approximately 2 million customers, making it the third largest broadband provider in the UK.

Broadband take up in UK tops two million
The UK now has two million broadband connections with new connections running at 35,000 each week, Oftel has announced today. David Edmonds, Director General of Telecommunications, said that the figures indicated that people had recognised the benefits of "fast, always on Internet access".
