Six killed in Brighton motorway smash

Six people have died following a road accident on a section of motorway north of Brighton yesterday.

The four-car collision occurred at around 4.30pm on the A23 – the main London to Brighton road – at Pyecombe.

Three people, including a two-year-old child, were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The two-year-old and one adult have been described today as in a "critical" condition, and the second adult remains in a "serious" condition. Three others who suffered minor injuries have since been discharged.

According to police, the driver of a black BMW car travelling on the southbound carriageway lost control of the vehicle and it ploughed through the central reservation. As it entered the northbound lane, the BMW collided with a number of vehicles.

The A23 northbound was closed from its junction with the A27 Brighton & Hove bypass as far as Hickstead; and the A23 southbound was closed between Hickstead and Pyecombe.

The road was re-opened at around 7.45am this morning.
