British soldier killed in Basrah clashes

A British soldier has been killed and several others wounded during fighting with militia in the southern Iraqi city of Basrah yesterday.

The dead soldier has been named as Private Lee Martin O'Callaghan, aged 20, from London. He was unmarried, and was serving with the 1st Battalion The Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment based at Tidworth.

Sixty-two British soldiers have now been killed in Iraq since the start of hostilities in March last year.

The MoD said today that there had been a number of serious clashes in the city between British troops and insurgents loyal to the cleric Moqtada al Sadr.

Tensions in the city are at an all-time high, and British forces in the area have been put on high alert.

The MoD said: "Whilst the troops continue to maintain a non-escalatory posture, they will use appropriate force where necessary in self-defence."

However, an army spokesperson told BBC Radio 4 this morning that, as the clashes were sporadic and localised, troops have been ordered not to "sort this problem out by approaching violence with further violence".
