Energy efficiency campaign receives £15.5m boost

The government has announced a £15.5 million grant to support 17 new heating schemes drawn up to improve heating and energy efficiency and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

This latest Community Energy programme initiative will help 19,000 people on low incomes and projects to cut harmful carbon emissions by almost 10,000 tonnes a year.

Commenting on today's announcement, Larry Whitty, Sustainable Energy Minister, said: "Our grants benefit many communities, and mean lower heating bills for lots of people and less greenhouse gases polluting the air we breathe".

Beneficiaries of the grants include Newcastle City Council which will receive £1.9 million to connect a new energy centre to 1,200 homes and seven public buildings.

Southampton City Council has also been allocated more than £3.5 million for a new community heating network connecting 1,720 homes, a school, care home and library.
