Key Questions
Hill Head Shed only provide quality sheds! It’s this simple fact that has kept us in business for over 20 years. As such, when buying a garden shed, here are the four key questions to bear in mind when buying the right quality of shed ...

What Material Should My Shed Be Made From?
Most DIY store and discount-shed retailers' sheds are made from strips of cheap pine, preservative treated. These featheredge boards are cheap but WILL warp and let in moisture and draughts! If you want to use your shed to work in and store tools, you require tongue and grove cladding. This is interlocking and keeps out the draughts. For the ultimate durability, we provide only Scandinavian woods – this timber has a lifespan of at least 30 years, and you don’t have to do any maintenance. Your shed will be supplied with floorboards nailed to preservative treated joists. These are the most vulnerable part of the building, so try and keep the floor as dry as possible by standing the shed on paving slabs or a concrete slab, with some DPC membrane between the stone and the timber.

Pitched or Flat Roof?
Pitched roof 'apex' sheds can be useful for storing parasols or sports kits overhead, to keep the shed floor clear for garden tools. Pent sheds have a single shallow angled roof that can be useful if you have to put the structure close to your neighbour’s fence, as the overall height is usually lower than an apex.

Base Requirements
Your shed will stay rot-free and dry if you spend a bit of time preparing the base properly. Mark out the shed base (make it about 50mm larger all around than the shed). Remove any turf and topsoil to a depth of around 8cm. Now mix together one part cement to eight parts building sand, and spread this evenly over the area so that it’s about 4cm deep.

Wood Quality
At Hill Head Sheds we offer our clients the choice of 1/2 inch, 3/4 inch and log effect, tongued and grooved weatherboard. All our sheds are built to the highest standards, utilising only quality woods. This ensures your shed has the correct protection from rotting, splitting, warping or becoming susceptible to mould and mildew.

Hill Head also generously uses Larsen Teak Preservative, offering further protection from rain, damp ground, UV light, fungal attack and wood-boring insects, not to mention the Irish winters!

Roof Quality
All sheds manufactured by Hill Head Sheds incorporate the highest quality tongue and groove V-board overlaid with 40kg green mineral felt. This is not only aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but ensures your shed remains water tight in all seasons.

Frame Quality
The frame quality is one of the most important elements in constructing quality sheds. Again, Hill Head go the extra mile offering 3 and 1.5 inch Scandinavian wood frames as standard, ensuring stability throughout. As a finishing touch, all frames are planed all-round.

Build Quality
The construction process at Hill Head Sheds is of the highest quality. The process is monitored from start to finish with regular quality-control inspections throughout the process. The quality is easy to see in the finished product. All sheds are constructed in Northern Ireland, employing highly-skilled craftsmen.
