McClaren Axed Over Euro Defeat
The Football Association (FA) has confirmed that Steve McLaren has been sacked as England coach - and his assistant has also been booted off.
Following an emergency meeting the FA announced that they had unanimously voted to axe McLaren following Wednesday's dismal performance against Croatia that saw England exit from Euro 2008. Assistant coach Terry Venables has also gone.
Last night it was evident that McLaren's 18-month tenure as coach was over as the team was booed off at half time.
It is reported that McLaren, 46, who was elevated to head coach on the departure of Sven-Goran-Eriksson, will receive around £2 million in compensation for the ending of his four-year deal.
While tipped as a possible replacement, former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said he thinks international management is a job for an older man.
It is estimated that England stand to lose around £8 million in lost revenue alone following the exit from Euro 2008. Kit merchandisers are estimating that revenues of up to £1 billion will be lost following England's defeat.
England next play in a friendly against France in March 2008.
