MP Demands Inquiry After Child's Death

An inquiry is being held after the death of a young girl who allegedly starved to death.

Police have confirmed that a seven-year-old girl was taken to hospital on Saturday where she was pronounced dead.

She has been named as Khyra Ishaq of Leyton Road, Handworth. Police have not confirmed her cause of death at this stage.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "Police are conducting enquiries and a man aged 29 and a woman aged 33 have been charged with neglect and appeared before Birmingham Magistrates on May 19. "They have been remanded to appear again on 28 May."

It is reported that the suspects, believed to be Khyra's mother and stepfather, are Junaid Abuhamza and Angela Gordon.

Birmingham Perry Barr MP Khalid Mahmood has demanded that Birmingham City Council conduct an inquiry into Khyra's death.

Mr Mahmood claimed that the young girl was removed from school by her mother 10 weeks ago.

Reports say that a neighbour saw children grabbing bread thrown out for birds.

It is understood that an educational social worker paid a visit to the Khyra's family home, but no further follow-up checks took place.

"There are lessons to be learned here - we have to be far more stringent with people who don't take their children to school," he said.

A Birmingham City Council spokesman said: "We are deeply saddened by the death of this child and our sympathies go to the child's family and friends at this difficult time."
