Police Launch Murder Enquiry After Fire Deaths
The Metropolitan Police have launched a murder enquiry following the discovery of the bodies of two men at a 'suspicious' fire in London's New Cross on Sunday.
Police and emergency services were called to the address in Sterling Gardens at approximately 10.10pm.
After the fire was extinguished, the bodies believed to be of men in their 20s, were found in a ground floor flat.
It is thought that police know the identity of the dead men and are attempting to contact all next of kin.
Homicide and Serious Crimes Command, based at Sutton, and the London Fire Brigade are investigating the deaths.
It is reported that the men were murdered first and then the fire was started in an effort to destroy evidence.
Another theory is that a petrol bomb was thrown at the premises.
A 62-year-old witness, who lives opposite the flats said he "didn't see any flames or fire" but "there was smoke and it smelled like rubber burning".
Leading the investigation, Detective Chief Inspector Mick Duthie said: "I am appealing for anyone who was in the area of Sterling Gardens at any time over the weekend who may have seen or heard anything suspicious near the address to get in touch.
"I am particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anyone near the premises around 9.30pm on Sunday."
Residents from the block of 16 flats were evacuated when the fire began. The building is being checked for structural damage before they are allowed to return.

Heroic Tyne Firemen Honoured
Two Tyne and Wear firefighters are to be recognised for their bravery at a special ceremony today. Andrew Nelson and Allan Richardson will be presented with the Chief Fire Officer's Commendations for brave and meritorious conduct after saving a man's life. The men took part in a dramatic rescue in the early hours of 4 February.

Firefighters launch four-day strike

Suspicious Glasgow Car Fires
Detectives in Glasgow's East End are investigating a spate of vehicle fire attacks in the city yesterday. Shortly after 3.30am police were called to a report of a vehicle fire in Ashvale Crescent, Glasgow. Upon arrival police were advised by Strathclyde Fire Service that four vehicles had been damaged by fire.
