Time Running Out As Man Questioned

The police have just hours remaining to either charge or release a man arrested in connection with the murder of a police officer in Craigavon earlier this year.

Detectives have until 5pm on Monday evening to question the suspect - a 22-year-old man - who was arrested on Thursday in relation to the shooting of Constable Stephen Carroll (pictured) in March.

The suspect is being held at Antrim Serious Crime Suite and he is still there after the PSNI were granted an extension to his detention on Saturday.

Constable Carroll, 48, from Banbridge, was shot dead as he attended a call for assistance from a distressed woman.

It happened just 48-hours after the Real IRA attack at Massereene Army Barracks in Antrim in which Sappers Mark Quinsey and Patrick Azimkar died.

The Engineering regiment that the two murdered soldiers belonged to has just returned to their Co Antrim barracks.

They were greeted as heroes as they paraded through the town on route to the barracks where they marched past the scene of the two soldiers' killing by dissident republicans.

Cosntable Carroll was shot dead less than two days later in a black week for Northern Ireland.

Three people have already been charged in connection with the murder.
