Shopping centre expansion sees jobs boost for Lisburn

A £15 million expansion to the Bow Street Mall shopping centre in Lisburn is expected to create 250 jobs for the town.

The extension to the shopping centre - which was purchased by private, locally-based investors for an estimated £30 million in 2001 - will see the creation of two floors of retail space, with expanded accommodation for vehicles in the form of two new parking areas.

In addition to nine new shop units, seven of the existing retail units already open in the Mall are to be extended, and it is thought that several new names will be attracted to the updated centre, in addition to a Post Office and a newsagents.

Over the last two years, the County Antrim town has been the scene of a retail explosion, following the development of Lisburn Square.

The £23 million retail and residential development, the only major shopping complex to open in Northern Ireland in 2001, provided 30 retail outlets, 45 apartments, office space and 210 underground car parking spaces, as well as creating around 300 jobs for Lisburn.

Other notable developments in and around the town in recent years also include the Lagan Valley LeisurePlex – home to Northern Ireland’s largest swimming pool, and the £25 million Lagan Valley Island facilities.
