Drink-Drive Limit To Be Cut
The amount of alcohol that puts a driver on the wrong side of the law is to be reduced.
Coming at the same time as a similar proposal in the Irish Republic, Northern Ireland's drink-driving limit is now set to be reduced next year.
The Stormont Environment Minister Edwin Poots has even hinted that the limit north of the border could be even lower than that proposed in the Republic.
His comments follow a proposal by Irish Transport Minister Noel Dempsey to lower the legal level to 50mg per 100 ml of blood from the present 80mg.
"The consultation would indicate that there is widespread support in Northern Ireland for reducing the drink-drive limit," Mr Potts said.
"Someone who is driving at the current drink-drive limit is six times more likely to be involved in a car crash.
"There was a proposal that we might go down to 20mg for professional drivers or for young drivers.
"Again, once you go up to 50mg you are still four times more likely to be involved in an accident," he concluded.
A public consultation process on the drink-driving limit, penalties and police detection powers has ended and Department of Environment officials are reviewing the evidence.

Further Roll Out Of 20mph School Speed Limit Schemes
The second phase of the part-time 20mph speed limit schemes at 106 schools across Northern Ireland has been rolled out, Infrastructure Minister, Nichola Mallon has announced. This takes the total number of schools benefiting from this new road safety scheme introduced by Minister Mallon to 209.

Part-Time 20mph Limit Introduced Outside School
Motorists passing a primary school in Carrickfergus will be required to slow to 20 miles per hour or below from tomorrow onwards. The new part-time speed limit will be operational outside the Model Primary School on the A2 Belfast Road from Wednesday 28 August.

Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins has announced the next phase of part-time 20mph speed limit schemes for schools across Northern Ireland. This initiative is part of the Department's ongoing commitment to improving road safety, particularly for vulnerable road users. To date, part-time 20mph zones have been implemented at 233 schools.

Road safety around schools in NI remains a priority with Infrastructure Minister Nicola Mallon committing to continue the roll-out of a 20mph speed limit on the roads outside their gates. The Minister has visited five schools in the Mid Ulster area which have been included in the 2021/22 programme to have 20mph speed limit schemes installed.
