Weekend Of Tragic Road Accidents

Two young Northern Ireland sport players have each suffered separate road accidents over the weekend - one with fatal results.

A 24-year-old boy died in hit-and-run road traffic collision in Racercourse Road, Londonderry, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A young man arrested in connection with the incident has since been released on bail.

The pedestrian was Martin Gallagher, from Sandale Park, who was member of Foyle Valley running club and had completed an important number of marathons.

SDLP Foyle MLA Mary Bradley has expressed her condolences to the family.

She said: "I know that the community will gather around the family at this most unbearable time and hope that they can take that as a positive for how well liked the he was."

"This is an awful tragedy and one which has occurred during a time of joy and positivity and celebration in the city," Bradley added.

Meanwhile, 17-year-old Padraig Hollywood is critically ill after a one-car crash on the Newtownhamilton Road in Armagh, just after midnight on Sunday.

He suffered serious head injuries following the crash and was transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

Hollywood featured in the Armagh minor side and was part of the Orchard panel, which defeated Mayo 0-10 to 0-7 in the All-Ireland decider at Croke Park in September.

Armagh minor Manager Paul McShane visited Hollywood in hospital.

Noting that the next 48 hours are 'critical', he said: "He is still in intensive care and critically ill. However, the doctors seem content with his progress."

Hoping for good news, the Armagh team boss stated: "Padraig is a popular and talented member of the squad. He is always in the panel and is a serious contender for a starting place next season."

Two more teens, who were in the same vehicle, were also hurt but their injuries are not life-threatening.
