Teachers Ballot For Industrial Action

The Irish National Teachers' Organisation is to begin nationwide meetings with its members over an upcoming ballot for industrial action.

The INTO executive is asking primary school teachers to support its call for up to three days of industrial action over threats to its members' pay, pensions and conditions of employment.

Nine meetings of the union’s 151 branches will be held tonight with the result of the ballot being revealed on 16 November.

In March of this year primary teachers voted for industrial action. Sheila Nunan, Incoming INTO General Secretary said in March mary teachers voted for industrial action, but this had been deferred to facilitate further talks with government. She said no meaningful engagement had taken place in the intervening months and that the upcoming budget would address the outstanding matter.

Ms Nunan said it was clear the government is actively considering further cuts to public sector pay and pensions in the run-up to the Budget on 9th December.

Ms Nunan added the decision to ballot for industrial action was not taken lightly by the INTO Executive.

“Teachers are fully aware of the economic challenges facing the country and have already incurred a significant reduction intake home pay. However, the current challenges must not be addressed by placing an unfair and disproportionate burden on public sector workers," she said.

Ms Nunan went on to say the this was the context in which the INTO leadership was asking members to back the Executive’s call for industrial action to resist further attacks on pay and conditions.
