Fatal stabbing in Newry town centre

Police have arrested two men in connection with a fatal stabbing in a busy shopping street in Newry

A young man, named locally as Brendan McCabe, around 18 years old, has died in hospital following the attack.

The incident, which occurred at around 12.30pm on Thursday 28 February, took place in the town's Canal Street in broad daylight.

Earlier in the day local police issued a statement saying that they do not consider the killing to be sectarian.

PSNI Chief Inspector Gary Hagan described the attack as a "savage murder".

Police have appealed for anyone who may have information to contact them urgently on 028 3026 5500.

Two men held after fatal Newry stabbing
Police have arrested two men in connection with a fatal stabbing in a busy Newry shopping street. Following the attack in broad daylight Brendan McCabe (18), from Mourne View Park in Newry, later died in hospital. Mr McCabe, who was with his mother at the time, was attacked at around 12.30pm on Thursday 28 February in the town's Canal Street.

Man Stabbed In West Belfast
A man is in a serious condition in hospital after being stabbed in west Belfast. The attack happened in the Hawthorn Street area at around 1.40pm on Thursday. The victim is believed to be in his 30s. A section of Hawthorn Street was closed and police examined the area. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Man shot in west Belfast
A man has been wounded in a gun attack at a house in west Belfast. A police spokesperson said that a caller to the house in Hawthorn Street had produced a gun and shot the man in the side. An ambulance was called to the scene, however the man was not taken to hospital. His injuries have been described as minor.
