Police investigate fatal fire in west Belfast
A police investigation is underway to establish the cause of a fire at a house in west Belfast in which a man in his late fifties died.
The man, who was known locally as Gerry Callaghan, aged 58, was found by fire services attending the blaze at Lenadoon Avenue in the early hours of Wednesday (February 27) morning.
A neighbour called the fire service after smelling smoke in the building, but when crews arrived it was not clear where the fire was. However, when crews managed to get into the flat, the man was already dead.
A police spokeswoman said the scene would be investigated to establish the cause of the fire. She added that foul play was not suspected.

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE

An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

Man Dies In Co L'Derry House Fire
A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.

Attacks on fire crews place their lives in danger and put communities at risk, said Public Safety Minister Michael McGimpsey today. Condemning a further spate of attacks on firefighters in Dungannon and Londonderry over the weekend, the Minister said it was absolutely unacceptable for anyone to assault emergency workers.

The PSNI have welcomed a two-year Stalking Protection Order (SPO) handed down to a 46-year-old Belfast man at Belfast Magistrates Court. The man had been found guilty of stalking and harassing his 50-year-old female ex-partner.

Man Jailed For Manslaughter Of David James Conville
A 31-year-old man has been jailed at Belfast Crown Court for the manslaughter of David James Conville in south Belfast in May, 2022. Edward Kelly was sentenced to serve three-and-a-half years, half of his sentence will be served in custody and half will be served on licence, following his guilty plea last November.
