New businesses should get 'Tax Right' from day one

The Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment has welcomed a new arrangement designed to help new businesses to understand tax issues affecting them and get their tax affairs on the right track from day one.

A partnership between the Inland Revenue and the Steering Committee of the Northern Ireland Business Start Programme (NIBSP) means that participants on the Business Start Programme can access advice and support from the Inland Revenue Business Support Team.

Sir Empey Reg said: “For a new business starting out tax matters are a concern and understanding the tax system can be time consuming. This new arrangement with NIBSP and the Inland Revenue will better prepare those embarking on self employment and support them when dealing with the complexities of the tax system and in complying with statutory obligations.

“This agreement is also a direct response to the Modernising Government White Paper which encourages Government Departments to seek ways to work together to benefit the public. Naomi Ferguson, Inland Revenue Northern Ireland, added: “Inland Revenue is keen to support individuals wishing to start small businesses in Northern Ireland. Our involvement in the NI Business Start Programme will help small businesses get on the right track with regards to their Tax and National Insurance. This can only be good for individuals and for business.”

The Inland Revenue team provide information about tax, National Insurance and VAT and has agreed to provide a 12-month support service to those who start up in business following participation in the NIBSP programme.

The Steering Committee of the Northern Ireland Business Start Programme (NIBSP) has representatives from local councils and LEDU, the small business agency.

The new arrangement came into operation in January and will run for a year. (MB)
