Police fire shots during foiled bank robbery

A robbery of cash being delivered by security guards to the Ulster Bank in Castlewellan, County Down, has been foiled by police officers.

It is understood no one was injured in the incident, during which a number of shots were fired by police.

The attempted robbery took place at around midday on Thursday, February 21, in the town's Upper Square.

A police spokesperson said two people have been arrested and a handgun has been recovered from the scene. A Vauxhall Cavalier used by the suspected robbers was involved in a collision with a private vehicle in Lower Square, after which police made the arrests.

Chief Inspector Geoffrey Gamble said: "Police have been involved in operations against crime in the area and we are delighted at these significant arrests."

Assistant Chief Constable Stephen White praised the "personal courage" of the officers involved in foiling the robbery attempt.

It is understood that the robbers made off with an undisclosed sum of money but this was later recovered.

SDLP assembly member for South Down Eamon O'Neill condemned the incident. He said: "There have been a number of robberies on banks in the area. Indeed the First Trust bank was forced to close for a time because of concerns for staff safety. This incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks on banks in the area."

Mr O'Neill praised the PSNI on their swift action.

The Police Ombudsman has been informed of the incident as is normal procedure when weapons are discharged.
