Minister launches countrywide ‘Help With Rates’ campaign

A new promotion to make home-owners on low incomes aware of the benefits available to help with meeting the cost of their rate bills, has been launched by the Minister of Finance and Personnel, Dr Seán Farren.

Dr Farren travelled to Omagh to open the first in a series of countrywide public advisory days organised by the Rates Collection Agency to highlight the ‘Help With Rates’ housing benefit campaign.

Endorsing the proactive approach being taken by the agency, the Minister said: “The purpose of this campaign is to make owner-occupiers who are on low incomes aware that help is at hand when their rate bill drops through the letterbox.

“The agency’s decision to hold a series of outreach advisory days in all 26 District Council areas is to be applauded. By co-operating with the wider public, and the voluntary and community sectors, the RCA aims to help take the hardship out of meeting the cost of owning a home.”

Posters and leaflets have been distributed across Northern Ireland to increase awareness of the scheme and a Freephone Helpline on 0800 587 7477 has been set up to provide additional advice and information.

Education Minister Welcomes Progress On Teacher's Pay
Education Minister, Paul Givan, has welcomed further progress on a pay settlement for teachers following the Department of Finance's approval of the pay award. All five recognised teachers' unions (INTO, NAHT, NASUWT, NEU, UTU) have signalled their acceptance of the teachers' pay offer for 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24.

River Lagan Flood Protection Works Underway
Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd has announced that flood protection refurbishment work on the River Lagan has got underway. The work costing £900k is being carried out by local building contractor Maurice Flynn and Sons who are replacing the gates at the Hilden and Lambeg river control structures on the River Lagan.

Covid Inquiry Revelations 'Extraordinary And Bizarre' – Beattie
Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) leader, Doug Beattie, has described some of the revelations of the Covid Inquiry as "extraordinary and bizarre". Mr Beattie has said that the early stages of the inquiry have revealed a "deliberate attempt to isolate and bully the Health Minister".

Economy Minister Launches Latest All Ireland Scholarships Scheme
Minister for the Economy, Conor Murphy, has announced the launch of the latest All Ireland Scholarships Scheme for students in Northern Ireland. The value of each scholarship is £5,500 per annum for the duration of their undergraduate programme. The All Ireland Scholarships were established in 2008 by JP McManus.
