First Minister Back At Stormont
Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson returns to the heart of Northern Ireland government today, following a media furore over his private life.
Yesterday evening Mr Robinson's wife of 40 years, Iris, told the press she had attempted to commit suicide after entering into a brief extramarital affair.
In December, Mrs Robinson, (pictured) the former MP and MLA for Strangford, announced her withdrawal from politics, citing mental health problems.
In an emotional TV appearance last night, the DUP Leader said he would stand by his wife despite being "deeply hurt".
Mrs Robinson, who issued a separate statement, said the relationship, which took place last year, had left her "completely ashamed and deeply embarrassed" .
So racked with guilt, the born again Christian said that she attempted to take her own life in March, after coming clean to her husband over the matter.
In the statement, Mrs Robinson also spoke of "providing financial support" to the unnamed businessman for a "business venture".
The political power couple, who married in the 1970s, have three grown up children, also involved in politics.
Mr Robinson last night dismissed suggestions the revelation would undermine his work at Stormont.
He is expected to meet with Sinn Féin Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness later.
Prior to the Christmas recess, Mr McGuinness warned the local institutions were at risk if progress was not made on the devolution of policing and justice powers.
Sinn Féin has continued to insisted the new department should be established as soon as possible, while the DUP says greater confidence must be felt within unionist communities.
