Consignia could change its name back to Post Office

Plans could be afoot to change the name of Consignia back to the Post Office.

The admission was made by Consignia chairman Allan Leighton, who, in an interview with the Times newspaper, said he would like to change the company's name back to it former moniker.

Mr Leighton said the new corporate identity had become tainted by bad publicity surrounding Consignia's recent poor performance. However he also said that the cost of reversing the name change could not be justified at a time when the company was planning to lay off thousands of workers as part of a massive restructuring exercise.

The Post Office changed its name to Consignia last year in a £1 million rebranding exercise designed to mark the organisation's transformation from a public service provider to a state-owned limited company.

The new identity was intended to reflect the organisation's more commercial approach, but as losses mount it has become synonymous with inept business management.
