Ministers drive forward drug and alcohol strategies

Six ministers from Northern Ireland's Executive have met to discuss and approve plans drawn up to deal with drug and alcohol abuse.

The Ministers met with the Drug and Alcohol Ministerial Strategic Steering Group to discuss the Regional Action Plan which sets out in detail over 115 activities across the areas of treatment, education and prevention, communities, information and research, social legislation and criminal justice.

Attending was Sir Reg Empey, Minister for Enterprise Trade and Investment; Mrs Carmel Hanna, Minister for Employment and Learning; Mr Sam Foster, Minister for the Environment; Mr Martin McGuinness, Minister for Education; Mr Michael McGimpsey, Minister for Culture, Arts and Leisure and Ms Bairbre de Brún, Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety, who chairs the group on behalf of the Executive.

Speaking after the meeting, Ms de Brún said: “The misuse of drugs and alcohol continues to be a major issue of concern and the fact that six ministers are represented on the Drug and Alcohol Strategic Steering Group reflects the high level of commitment afforded to this issue.”
