Police Service to receive £16m additional funding

The Northern Ireland Security Minister Jane Kennedy has announced the police service is set to receive £16 million this year to cover extra spending pressures.

Ms Kennedy made the announcement during Northern Ireland questions in the House of Commons on Wednesday February 13.

She told the Commons the Government was fully committed to ensuring that the Police Service of Northern Ireland had the resources it needed to continue to deliver a high quality policing service to all in the community.

"The police grant for this year amounted to £656 million representing a high level of commitment by government," she said.

"In August, the Secretary of State allocated an additional £10 million to the police grant to relieve pressures arising from the costs of policing disturbances earlier in the year.

"I am pleased to be able to announce that a further £16 million has been made available to the Police Service of Northern Ireland to meet all the remaining pressures identified by the chief constable in this financial year."

The extra funding was announced after a petition calling for Dromara police station in County Down to remain open was handed into Downing Street.
