Improved unemployment figures 'must not breed complacency'

Statistics released from the Labour Force Survey, for the period October to December 2001, has shown that there has been a slight decrease in unemployment.

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) definition there are currently 46,000 people unemployed or 6.1 per cent of the workforce. This is a decrease of 0.1 percentage points on last quarter’s figures

Commenting on the figures Sir Reg Empey, MLA, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, said: “Better than expected unemployment figures, must not breed complacency. The resilience of the economy should not disguise the fact that manufacturing remains under great pressure."
