Tánaiste announces jobs boost for Castlebar

Tánaiste Mary Harney has announced the creation of 80 new jobs for County Mayo, after news that US medical device materials provide Fort Wayne Metals Research Products Corp is to invest €3.4 million in the establishment of a European Centre at Castlebar.

Fort Wayne Metals will be the first tenant at the new IDA Business and Technology Park in Castlebar. The facility will manufacture, in a high quality, skilled operation, precision wire for the medical devices industry in Europe, where the company has a strong customer base.

The Tánaiste, announcing the arrival of Fort Wayne Metals to Ireland, said: "The company is currently focusing its growth strategy on the European market and this new Irish operation will be an integral part of that strategy. This is a very important investment for both the medical devices industry here and for Co. Mayo, not least because of the employment setbacks suffered by the county in recent months.

"It will further strengthen the healthcare supplier base in Ireland as well as Ireland's reputation as the leading location for healthcare investment in Europe. It will provide skilled employment opportunities for the people of Co. Mayo and in doing so will also provide an enormous boost to the local economy."

The new operation will be housed in a customised 25,000 square feet facility, which Fort Wayne Metals is to construct at the Park and which will be completed by the end of the year. It will partner the National Centre of Biomedical Engineering Science at National University of Ireland Galway to carry out research into specific areas.

Scott Glaze, CEO, Fort Wayne Metals, added: "With our increasing number of customers in Europe, our strategic plans called for expansion there in 2002. IDA Ireland provided us with all the right reasons as to why Ireland would be the best European location for this investment."
