Car Scrappage's 'Exit Phase' Underway
The final phase of the Government's scrappage scheme began today.
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson has reminded would-be car buyers to take advantage of the scheme before it closes.
Car manufacturers have now been allocated shares of about 50,000 potential further orders based on brand popularity by the Department for Business, to help ensure a smooth closing of the scheme.
Lord Mandelson said: "Car owners need to move quickly to avoid disappointment if they want to buy a new car at a discount.
"Industry figures have showed again and again the benefits that the scrappage scheme is continuing to deliver to the automotive sector and beyond. It is great news that in January scrappage helped the industry to achieve its biggest output gain since May 1976."
The UK scheme, with up to £400m from Government and matched funding from manufacturers, is intended to provide a short term boost to industry and drive consumer demand during the downturn.
It has also removed older vehicles from the road and encouraged consumers to invest in new, safer, and potentially more environmentally friendly models.

Following the success of the Government’s car scrappage scheme which ended in February 2010, Škoda UK has introduced its own ‘Happy Swapping’ initiative. For those who missed out on the car scrappage scheme, Skoda is offering drivers who own a vehicle with a 52 registration or older, the chance to swap their old vehicle no matter the make or model.

Scrappage Strengthens Car Sales
New car sales for February 2010 announced today, show that new cars sold in the month were 26.4% up on February 2009, the eighth consecutive monthly increase. Latest Government figures show that 367,506 new vehicles have been ordered through the scrappage scheme since it went live. Over 19% of February sales were part of the scrappage scheme.
