Trimble and Durkan open Washington office to promote province

The First Minister and Deputy First Minister are set to travel to the United States of America this weekend to officially open an office in Washington for the Northern Ireland Executive.

The aim of the office, known as the Northern Ireland Bureau, is to create a distinct and regional voice for the Executive in political circles, and is charged with promoting Northern Ireland to the wider US community, the Bush administration and selected state departments.

The official opening of the Executive's branch in America is part of a busy schedule for Mr Trimble and Mr Durkan.

The First Minister and Deputy First Minister will commence their visit in New York where they will attend the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. There they will engage in a debate entitled, 'The Northern Ireland Peace Process: Next Steps?' chaired by Senator George Mitchell. MP for West Belfast Gerry Adams and Progressive Unionist assembly man David Ervine will also be involved in the debate.

While in New York, Mr Trimble and Mr Durkan plan to meet Mayor Bloomberg and sign the Book of Condolence, before laying a wreath at Manhattan's 'Ground Zero' and meeting with city firefighters.

They will also meet with senior members of the US administration including Ambassador Richard Haass and National Security Adviser, Dr Condoleezza Rice.

In addition, the Ministers will undertake their own separate meetings with key figures including Senators Kennedy, Dodd, Delahunt and Hyde. (AMcE)
