Tyrone Bridge Walkway Slammed
The SDLP MLA for Mid Ulster, Patsy McGlone, is seeking an urgent meeting with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency and Roads Service to discuss the pedestrian bridge built alongside the existing Ballinderry Bridge in Cookstown.
Mr McGlone (pictured) said: "Having seen what Roads Service have constructed alongside the current bridge, I have to say that the design of this walkway is completely unacceptable.
"The majority of people living in the area would have preferred a widening of the bridge or a new bridge constructed on the same site.
"Due to the historic nature of the bridge those options were ruled out, but what they have put in place is entirely unsympathetic to that local heritage.
"It is my understanding that the heritage people at NI Environment Agency had serious reservations about the proposal, and that they were over-ruled by Roads Service."
He continued: "What they have constructed is entirely out of keeping with the historic bridge and there has been no consultation with the local community.
"I have requested an urgent meeting with both the NI Environment Agency and Roads Service where I intend to raise my strong objections to this metal monstrosity."
