Ryanair place $9 billion order with Boeing

Low fare airline Ryanair has placed an order for 100 Boeing Next Generation 737-800 airplanes, making it the largest ever singe firm order for the model.

The value of the order – plus the 50 further options the air carrier has signed for - is valued at over $9 billion. The 100 new 737-800s are scheduled to begin delivery to Dublin sometime in 2002, continuing through 2010.

The order is good news for Boeing, who have announced that challenging economic conditions have cut more than $600 million from its profits. Revealing its fourth quarter results, Boeing – currently the worlds leading aircraft manufacturer – revealed earnings of $722m but said that it was taking loss of $622m, mostly due to reduced demand for commercial aircraft after the events of September 11.

The company has already made plans to cut up to 30,000 from its commercial jet unit as part of a cost-cutting strategy, and has begun to diversity away from the commercial airline business in order to safeguard its business performance. (CL)
