Programme launched to aid long-term unemployed

Employment Minister Carmel Hanna has revealed details of a new initiative designed to facilitate a swift return to work for those wishing to enter into employment again.

The project – entitled ‘Focus for Work’ - is the result of research from the Taskforce on Employability and Long-Term Unemployment.

The basic concept behind Focus for Work is that those seeking work will initially be offered “softer” forms of assistance and advice on jobsearch, planning and interview skills. However, if such individuals still cannot find employment, the focus will then shift to more intensive intervention through tailored vocational training and work experience opportunities.

Welcoming the initiative, Mrs Hanna said: "The Focus for Work initiative allows intervention at an early stage to reduce the likelihood of a drift into long-term unemployment, which is a particular problem in Northern Ireland.

"A key feature of the new initiative is the individual and personal nature of what is on offer. The Focus for Work advisers can help identify the best way forward for those seeking work, and direct them to the element of the programme which holds out the best chance of individual success.

The programme will be delivered through the Employment Department’s JobCentre network in association with a wide range of training providers. (CL)
