Education Minister opens £4m primary school in Derry

The Education Minister has unveiled a plaque to mark the official opening of a new £4 million school building for St John’s Primary School in Derry.

The new building in Bligh’s Lane, Creggan is one of seven school projects included in the investment package announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, in May 1998.

Work started on site at St. John’s in the summer of 1999 and was completed in August 2001. Construction costs were approximately £3.4million and the total cost will be some £4million.

Speaking at the opening on Tuesday January 22, Mr McGuinness said: “I am delighted to be associated with this opening. This new building will provide the accommodation to educate our children and allow them to fully develop their talents and abilities.

“I am always very conscious of the poor state of many of our schools and the backlog of work that is required to improve them. I am committed to addressing these needs and I am continually seeking the additional funding that is required. This new building is a shining example of what can be achieved.”

The Minister was welcomed to the school by the Principal, Mrs Patricia Ferry, and the Chairman of the Board of Governors, Mr Pat McCrystal.

The new premises were officially opened and dedicated by the Most Reverend Bishop Seamus Hegarty. (AMcE)
