Enniskillen Road Works Set For Start
Contractors will be on site at the end of this month as work to open-up four continuous traffic lanes to one of Enniskillen's most congested routes starts.
DRD Roads Service are calling in contractors to realign the Wellington Road on the Through-pass by creating two continuous lanes westbound and two continuous lanes eastbound to improve traffic flow at the access to Eden Street car park.
A DRD spokesman said: "There are a lot of proposals we are looking at to improving traffic congestion in Enniskillen and this is one of them.
"This area in particular causes particular problems because traffic heading from Gaol Square westbound have to filter into one lane of traffic at the traffic lights at Eden Street and Ulsterbus depot. Traffic can only currently turn right into Eden Street car park.
"With these new proposals, there will be continuous two lanes of traffic and we hope that this will improve traffic flow significantly."
It's part of DRD Roads Service's strategy for improvement of the A4 Wellington Road, which includes approximately 20 options to alleviate traffic flow in the congested town and would be subject to finance becoming available.
Another option being considered is a new one-way system for Enniskillen, which could see traffic going west one way along the Wellington Road and east along the Queen Elizabeth Road.
But Roads Service understand this could present a number of difficulties at Belmore Street which has already difficulty coping with current levels of traffic.
Traffic is expected to be disrupted slightly as Roads Service begin the operation.
