Rural NI Portal goes online at Greenmount
The Rural NI Portal has been launched by Agriculture Minister Brid Rodgers at an event held at Greenmount College, County Antrim.
Developed by Compaq Computer in partnership with the college and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD), the Rural NI Portal is an internet site which offers thousands of pages of agriculture news and information on issues such as training courses, livestock, crops, rural development and countryside management.
Paul McGurnaghan, Greenmount College, described the Portal as “the definitive website for farmers and the wider agricultural community”.
He added: “Interactive business tools are also provided to help farmers manage their business, along with information on grants and subsidies. There is also a direct link to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s APHIS system providing on-line registration of animal births and deaths and access to herd lists.
“Not only does it provide a wealth of information and links to advisers, but it also enables producers to benchmark their performance against other farmers in Northern Ireland and beyond.”
Dan Gault, Account Manager, Compaq, said that the creation of the Portal had been “an exciting project” for the company. He said: “The Northern Ireland agriculture sector has a reputation of being one of the most technologically advanced in the world, particularly in the area of business management and traceability.
“Compaq has unrivalled expertise and experience in providing reliable and secure systems of this kind and we will continue to work with Greenmount College and DARD to ensure that the Portal fully meets the needs of the sector and its users.” (CL)

DAERA Minister To Prioritise Animal Welfare Issues
New Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) Minister, Andrew Muir, has said that animal welfare issues will be among his top priorities. The Minister was speaking during a visit to the offices of the USPCA in Newry where he met with staff and volunteers during which a range of animal health issues were discussed.

Government reaffirm e-farming pledge
The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to using electronic services, such as the Rural Portal and APHIS Online, to ease the regulatory burden on farmers. Agriculture Minister, Ian Pearson made his statement to developing electronic services during a visit to Greenmount Campus, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise.
