Marine Framework

NI Environment Minister Edwin Poots has announced new proposals designed to create a robust framework for NI's marine environment. Speaking in the Assembly on the launch of the public consultation entitled 'A Northern Ireland Marine Bill – Policy Proposals', Mr Poots said: "There is an inescapable need to manage our seas in a more sustainable way to maximise the environmental, social and economic benefits. I am determined to achieve this by delivering a completely new strategic system of marine planning." The Minister said also that the launch of this consultation was another major step in the process and urged everyone with an interest in the marine environment to submit their views.

City Airport Backs Disabled Kids

Bangor's Riding for the Disabled Association have become the latest recipients of funding from George Best Belfast City Airport's Community Fund. Youngsters from Clifton Special School in the town, who attend a weekly horse riding session at Birr House Riding School in Holywood, are already benefiting from the purchase of a large double mounting block, which significantly improves the safety of the children when getting on and off the horses. Bangor Riding for the Disabled is part of a UK-wide organization that aims to provide disabled people with the opportunity to learn to ride horses and ponies in order to benefit their health and well-being.

CIT Robbery Probed

Detectives are still appealing for information following the attempted robbery of cash-in-transit staff at Ballybeen Square in east Belfast earlier this week. It happened on Monday morning (12 April). At approximately 9.45am a guard was approached by a masked male brandishing a knife which led to a struggle during which the security guard received a slash wound to his hand. The robber fled empty-handed and the guard was taken to hospital for treatment to his wound, which was not believed to be serious. Police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or anyone with information to contact them at Castlereagh on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively, information about crime can be passed anonymously to the Crimestoppers charity by calling 0800 555 111.

NIIRTA Slams Job Losses

The Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association (NIIRTA) has described the recent closure of electrical retailer Laser and the loss of its 140 jobs as a sad loss to the local economy. Glyn Roberts, NIIRTA Chief Executive commented: "This is a terrible blow to both the local economy and the 140 staff and is further proof that we are in no way in a sustainable recovery as retailers continue to struggle with a downturn in spending," he said, calling upon all local candidates in this General Election to state where they stand on a proposed increase in National Insurance Contributions on businesses - "given the difficulties that they still face".

Rates Relief

A 4% discount is available to all Northern Ireland domestic ratepayers if they pay their rate bill in full by 7 May. Ratepayers are reminded that if they want to receive the early payment discount they must make an arrangement to pay their bill as soon as possible as the deadline is fast approaching. A spokesperson for Land & Property Services (LPS) explained: "If LPS receives payment in full, in a single payment by the discount day, which this year is 7 May, you will receive a 4% early payment discount. The onus is on ratepayers to ensure that payment is received by 7 May. To ensure payment reaches us on time you must allow a minimum of five working days for payment to reach LPS," he said, noting that the option of paying their bill online is now available too.
