NHBC reveals rise in housebuilding applications
The latest round of statistics released by NHBC (National House Building Council) show that UK applications to build new homes increased by 6 per cent during December 2001.
A total of 8,258 applications were made by the private sector and housing associations to start new homes in the UK, up six per cent on the same month in 2000. Private sector starts for the month rose to 7,407, while there were 851 UK housing association applications, over double the amount on 2001.
New build completions for both the public and private sectors totalled 10,973 in December 2001, a 13 per cent decrease on the same month last year (12,666).
Additional information from NHBC reveals that an average of 523 new homes were sold each day during December 2001, an increase of nine per cent on the same month last year.
However, Imtiaz Farookhi, chief executive of NHBC, warned: “Despite a big increase in housing market sales in 2001 and the largest growth in house prices for over a decade, house builders started one per cent fewer new homes. This situation may ease if the Government’s proposal for radical reform of the planning system is adopted. However, it will be some time before they have any impact on house building levels.” (CL)

UK new investment projects fall
The latest Ernst & Young European Investment Monitor survey has revealed that the number of new investment projects into Europe in 2001 fell by 12 per cent on 2000 figures. Countries that performed poorly in 2001 included the UK with a 34 per cent decline from 575 projects to 377.

UK house prices soar by 2.8 per cent
UK house prices rose 2.8 per cent in September, the highest monthly increase in eight years, according to a report by the building society Nationwide. The figures revealed in the report reveal that the price of the average UK home was 15 per cent higher last month than in September 2000.

Nationwide revises housing prediction
The Nationwide building society has reported house prices up 0.4 per cent last month, and predicted that house prices will end the year 11 per cent higher than they began, compared with an earlier forecast of a seven per cent rise.
