Compaq gets £1m vote from NI Electoral Office

The Chief Electoral Officer, Denis Stanley, has announced that the Electoral Office for Northern Ireland has awarded the contract for its new computer system to Compaq Computers.

The new system, costing approximately £1 million, is to replace a system which has been in use for almost 10 years and is scheduled to become operational in the summer of this year.

Mr Stanley said: “The new system will greatly enhance the capability of the Electoral Office to maintain the Register of Electors and to check the validity of those registered to vote. It represents a significant level of investment and will help to detect and eliminate fraud at the polls. Everyone in the Electoral Office is looking forward to working with Compaq in what promises to be an exciting and comprehensive project.”

Compaq Computer, among Northern Ireland’s largest providers of solutions based information technology will be developing and implementing the new system.

Dermot Hanna, Account Manager, Compaq said: “Compaq has unrivalled expertise and experience in providing reliable and secure infrastructure systems of the type now on order for the Electoral Office. The company will be working closely with electoral staff to ensure that the new system provides an efficient and cost effective solution and fully meets the needs of the office and of the electorate for years to come.”

The new system will be used in all Parliamentary, European, Assembly and District Council elections in Northern Ireland and at any future referendum. It will also incorporate all the measures to be introduced by Electoral Fraud legislation expected later this year. (MB)
