Concern For 200 Offaly Jobs

Concern is growing over the future of 200 jobs in Co Offaly.

Union representatives and workers at the Covidien factory in Tullamore have been called to meetings with management at the plant earlier this week.

It is believed that a voluntary redundancy scheme for between 100 and 200 staff members will be announced.

Covidien was formerly the Tyco Medical Devices company and has two plants in the midlands at Tullamore and Athlone.

The Co Offaly plant in the Sragh Industrial Estate has been in existence since 1982 under previous owners and employs 650 people.

The firm is under US ownership but moved its headquarters to Dublin last year.
