Easyjet enter talks with aircraft makers for new planes

Easyjet is believed to have entered talks with aircraft makers Boeing and Airbus asking for quotes for 75 aircraft to be delivered within five years.

In what promises to be one of the biggest orders ever placed by a low fare carrier, the extra aircraft will help Easyjet build on a surge in trade which has taken it through the seven million passengers a year mark.

While flag carriers worldwide have suffered a slump in trade following the 11 September attacks in the United States, low cost carriers have continued to enjoy strong passenger growth, underpinned by fare reductions.

Easyjet expect within six years to carry more passengers than all but the big three European airlines - British Airways, Lufthansa and Air France.

Trade is also likely to be boosted by expansion in less mature Continental markets. (MB)
