Decommissioning deadline extended in Commons
A bill that extends the existing timeframe for decommissioning was passed in the House of Commons despite opposition from Tory and unionist MPs.
The Northern Ireland Arms Decommissioning (Amendment) Bill passed on Friday December 18, will now extend the existing amnesty on decommissioning, which expires on midnight February 26th 2002, for one year.
There will also be the possibility of further 12-month extensions each year for up to five years subject to UK parliamentary approval.
Also in the Commons on Friday, MPs were voting on whether to support leader of the House Robin Cook’s motion to allow Sinn Féin access to Westminster facilities. Tories and Unionists have made clear their animosity to such a move, which would enable Sinn Féin’s four MPs access to parliamentary offices without swearing allegiance to the Queen.
The Conservative shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, Mr Quentin Davies, soundly condemned the motion in Friday’s Daily Telegraph and said Conservatives were prepared to oppose the move “with every ounce of determination at our disposal”. (AMcE)

NI Grassroot Sports Facilities To Benefit From £5.66m Fund
The UK Government and the Irish FA have announced that 17 projects across NI will benefit from a £5.66 million fund aimed at boosting grassroots sports facilities. The projects will receive funding for 3G artificial grass pitches, with 12 projects receiving money to install new floodlights.
