Lidl Checkouts Ring For Cancer Care

A supermarket chain operating across NI is to put its 'money where its charitable mouth is' by donating 10p taken at its check-outs on the sale of a range of selected products to cancer charity, the Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF).

From this month, Lidl shoppers can choose between selected healthy own brand items that come from local suppliers, including Rowan Hill Bakery wholemeal soda bread; Bally Manor fresh Irish chicken breast fillets and locally sourced broccoli or iceberg lettuce. Customers will benefit from a nutritional diet while raising vital funds to help support cancer patients and their families in Northern Ireland.

Gerry McElwee, Head of Cancer Prevention, UCF (pictured) said: "One of the simplest steps to help reduce your risk of cancer is to eat more fruit, vegetables and whole grain foods.

"Not only do these foods help protect against many types of cancer, they are also packed with essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to boost your immune system and help fight infection.

"So they help you look and feel great whilst providing you with all the energy you need to get through the day.

"We are delighted that our partner, Lidl Northern Ireland, is supporting our campaign message that prevention is key by making it easier for people to eat a healthy diet," he said.

Lidl Northern Ireland is a long-term charity partner of UCF and has already raised £36,000 and are aiming to raise much more over the coming months.

Together Lidl and UCF have worked together to communicate the importance of health, nutrition and an active lifestyle to children and consumers in Northern Ireland through a variety of initiatives.

This special promotion is one of a number of fundraising events planned by the discount retailer.

Lizzie Lumsden from Lidl Northern Ireland GmbH said: "Lidl are delighted to specially select four items from our Northern Ireland suppliers in order to raise vital funds for local charity UCF. For a whole month we will donate 10p from every one of the products sold to help UCF with its many vital services."
