Joint treaty heralds closer policing links
A treaty to provide closer links between police services in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic is to be signed in January 2002.
Security Minister Jane Kennedy revealed details of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Police Co-operation on December 13.
Ms Kennedy said: “This means that both Governments intend to put in place the necessary legislative and administrative measures to allow for movement between two police services in both directions. So, officers in the PSNI will be able to apply for posts in the Garda Siochana, and vice versa. In both cases the selection will be on merit. There will also be a programme of secondments between two services, to enable police officers to develop and enhance their professional skills from experience with the other organisation.”
The revised Implementation Plan, issued by the government in August 2000, set out the government’s position to the relevant Patten recommendations addressed in this timetable. (CD)

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Man's Body Recovered From Bangor Marina
Police have launched an investigation after the body of a man was recovered from Bangor Marina on Wednesday, 13 May. Police received a report that a man had entered the water shortly after 10.15am. Emergency services and police attended the scene and the body was recovered from the water. Police are not treating the death as suspicious.

PSNI and Gardaí forge formal training links
The Police Service of Northern Ireland and An Garda Síochána have announced the formalisation of their training links. Officers from both police services are now regularly involved in delivering training to students in each other’s organisation.

Man Arrested In Connection With 1992 Police Officer Murder
A 59-year-old man has been arrested at Birmingham Airport in connection with a fatal mortar attack in Newry in 1992. The man was arrested on Wednesday, 21 February by detectives from PSNI's Legacy Investigation Branch, investigating the murder of Constable Colleen McMurray and the attempted murder of her colleague in 1992.

A former police station in Belfast city centre is to be redeveloped for a new 74-bedroom hotel. Belfast City Council's Planning Committee approved the development on Queen Street, along with granting Listed Building Consent to bring the building into use again.
