Sion Mills hit by jobs blow at Herdman’s Mill

The Amalgamated Transport and General Worker’s Union (ATGWU) have released information that there are plans to cut 20 production and 10 craftsmen jobs at Herdmans’ Mill in Sion Mills, Co. Tyrone.

No-one from the company was available to comment, but the union say that the cuts are due to this year’s poor flax crop.

Herdmans’ Mill has been a feature of Sion Mills for over 150 years.

In 1989, a new purpose-built mill was constructed to the south of the Old Mill. Owned and run by the fifth generation of the Herdman family it is now the last wet-spinning flax mill in Ireland, and currently employs 600 workers, 30 per cent of who live in the village.

The Mill is situated on the north-western border of Northern Ireland with Co. Donegal, in an area of high unemployment, designated at present as ‘deprived.’
