Airline passenger numbers still affected by September 11

BAA has revealed that passenger numbers at their seven UK airports were 10.6 per cent lower last month than in November 2000.

BAA, whose airports include London's Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted, believe the effects of September 11 in the US were still affecting figures.

The report also confirmed growing trade for budget carriers. BAA credited a 10.5 per cent rise in traffic on Irish routes to competition amongst low cost scheduled airlines.

Traffic on North Atlantic routes continued to be the worst affected by the after affects of the attacks while on other long haul routes traffic fell by nearly 13 per cent.

The data came a day after British Airways was reported to be considering axing all shorthaul flights in favour of long haul traffic.

However, the figures were still an improvement on October figures, when traffic volumes were 12 per cent lower than a year before. (MB)
