Maybin secure £20 million NI Court Service contract

Maybin Property Support Services (Northern Ireland) has been awarded a £20m contract to provide security in Northern Ireland's courts.

As a result of the contract the Ballymena-based firm is set to recruit more than 200 workers to carry out a range of jobs which were previously performed by the RUC.

Maybin, which is one of the largest providers of security, cleaning and contracted soft services in Ireland, signed the five-year deal which the Northern Ireland Court Service said was worth over £4 million a year.

The move reduces manpower on police numbers which were reduced in size as part of the programme of change outlined in the Northern Ireland Police Act.

Police officers are also likely to be moved away from duties at civil and county court proceedings.

However a presence will be maintained at the Crown Courts and court managers will keep police informed of high-profile or terrorist cases, which may need extra security. (MB)
