Omagh victim named as one of Britain’s bravest women
Donna Marie McGillion, one of the people seriously injured in the Real IRA bombing of Omagh, has been named as one of Britain’s Bravest Women.
Mrs McGillion, 25, was named among the seven women to receive the award from ‘Best’ magazine after a nationwide search to find women who make the world a better place.
Donna Marie suffered serious injuries in the Real IRA blast in Omagh town centre on 15 August 1998 which left 29 people dead, including a woman seven months pregnant with twins.
Given only a five per cent chance of pulling through Donna Marie spent six weeks in a coma. She was so badly burned that she had to wear a specially constructed mask while her wounds healed. But despite her injuries, seven months later Donna Marie married her fiancé Gary and she gave birth to their first child, Cara, in August this year.
Best editor Louise Court said on Monday December 3: "This is the third year that Best has held these awards, and it still never fails to amaze us the sheer will, courage and strength that these women have demonstrated within their lives.
All the winners received a day of pampering, dinner and a night's hotel accommodation as well as an award for their actions from the magazine. (AMcE)
