Irish Pubs Facing Crisis
Ireland's once burgeoning licensed trade is experiencing a 'meltdown' with sales down by more than 14% in the first seven months of the year, the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland claimed today.
It said the weak economic environment and lower consumer demand were causing further problems for the sector, which says it has experienced a 25% reduction in sales since 2000 - now putting jobs at risk.
The group said publicans were also facing ongoing "cost pressure" which was being generated by Government related costs such as commercial rates and regulation.
"In the short to medium term, there is absolutely no sign of market conditions improving for the pub trade," the Secretary Donall O'Keeffe said.
The group also said the reduction in excise duty in the last budget had helped to stem cross border alcohol shopping somewhat, with sales recovering by more than 6%, but it said it would work with the Government to identify further stimulus measures in this December's Budget to boost the employment-intensive hospitality industry in order to prevent closures and save jobs.
Last year, a report commissioned by the group stated that as many as 2,000 rural pubs would close their doors in the next decade as their owners retire and the next generation opts not to continue in business.

CBI survey reveals shop sales remain strong
Retail sales remained strong in March but the annual rate of increase has edged down from the peaks over Christmas and the New Year, according to the CBI's latest monthly distributive trades survey. The survey, released on Tuesday April 2, was conducted between 5 and 20 March 2002 with 268 retail outlets taking part.

Good year for Tesco as profits top £1.6bn
It has been a good year for the supermarket retailer Tesco which has seen pre-tax profits soar to £1.6 billion, according to the group's full-year preliminary statement issued today. In addition to driving up pre-tax margins by 17.6%, the company said that it had slashed its debts by £600 million, down to £4.1 billion. In the UK, sales grew by 14.

Sainsbury's reports strong Christmas trading
Supermarket group Sainsbury's has reported stronger sales over the Christmas period in its latest trading figures published today. The group, Britain's third largest supermarket chain, reported a 5.2% rise in like-for-like sales in the 12 weeks up to the end of December - the fourth quarter of consecutive like-for-like sales growth for the firm.
