'Review Family Murder Verdict', Says SDLP
A fresh campaign to 'right an injustice' kicked off today with political support at Stormont.
SDLP Justice Spokesperson Alban Maginness has reiterated a call for a review into the conviction of John Torney, who was found guilty of the murders of his wife and two children in 1994. Mr Torney subsequently died in prison.
Mr Maginness was speaking ahead of a book launch at Stormont on Monday by Mr Torney's sister-in-law, Hilary Torney, who continues to campaign to have the conviction reviewed.
Mr Maginness said: "This was, and continues to be, a most tragic case. It is important that the family's campaign for justice retains support and momentum. Today's book launch can act as a further catalyst in that regard," he said.
"There is a real concern that vital evidence was not disclosed at John Torney's original trial. The Criminal Cases Review Commission must now review and examine this evidence as a matter of urgency.
"This is a case worthy of serious further investigation and there are enough concerns that it should be referred back to the Court of Appeal.
"I know the family will continue to fight for this outcome and it is heartening for them to know that they have the support of all political parties in achieving their goal," he concluded.

Swann To Prioritise Settling Health Worker Pay Disputes
Newly appointed Health Minister, Robin Swann, has said that he will prioritise securing pay settlements for staff and resolve current industrial action. Mr Swann said: "That is my immediate priority and I want to see pay negotiations being initiated without delay, consequently I have written to the trade unions inviting them to early discussions.
