One2One to shed 900 jobs

Mobile network operator One2One has announced that it is to shed 900 jobs in the UK thanks to the less profitable operating environment currently afflicting the mobile phone market.

Due to its position as one of the UK’s smallest network operators, One2One has been hit hard by saturation in the market for mobile phones, with the war for market share levelling out as new customers become increasingly difficult to recruit. In addition, as telecoms shares have recently been slashed in value, the whole sector is undergoing a confidence crisis that has seen many operators increasing – in some cases even doubling – the price of handsets in the pay-as-you-go category.

The job losses – representing 13 per cent of One2One’s UK workforce – come at a time when the company is aggressively promoting its profile in advance of its rebranding as “T-Mobile” next year, with the current advertising campaign trying to convince mobile users to upgrade their handsets.

One2One as not yet revealed the specific nature of the redundancies, although it is thought that most will occur in the customer services division. (CL)
